The Unseen Landscape at Wild Space Gallery

Wild Space Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition, The Unseen Landscape, with three contemporary artists: Julie Evans, Karl Kelly, and Eric Wolf. In The Unseen Landscape, the artists complicate the very idea of representing the natural world. By evoking both the visible and the invisible, they are asking how we experience our environment, and how we construct images of it. The artists suggest what might become visible when representation is no longer the endpoint, but the beginning of an encounter between ourselves and our world.

Julie Evans, Karl Kelly, and Eric Wolf directly engage in the natural world with distinct aesthetic visions and approaches to representation and pictorial space. Evans works outward from the wisdom and vision of the "inner eye"; for Kelly, painting is an action rather than a depiction; and Wolf uses recognizable forms and horizon lines to construct compelling and enigmatic landscapes. All three artists bring us deeply into an experience of nature and treat picture-making as a means of arriving at something true. Rather than illustrating what landscapes look like, these artists create biospheres and invite us to witness and encounter the natural world and, ultimately, the profound experience of being part of it.

Join us on October 10th from 5-9pm for the opening reception The Unseen Landscape and from 6-7pm for a lively conversation with Julie Evans, Karl Kelly, Eric Wolf, moderated by Leslie Elsasser and Noel Smith. Q&A will follow. We look forward to seeing you!

Painter Eric Wolf joins Justin Baker to talk about growing up creative, making bold choices with humble materials, and the quiet discipline of working in black ink on white paper.

They also dig into the meditative act of painting outdoors, the role of mentors, and his thoughtful resistance to social media.
